Best System Rescue Disc?
When your computer starts behaving erratically or won't boot, one of
the first troubleshooting steps is to boot to some media other than your
hard drive to see if you can diagnose—or even repair—the problem.
Thankfully, there are tons of system rescue CDs and DVDs available to
help troubleshoot almost any hardware or operating system. This week, we
want to know which ones you turn to in times of crisis.
There are
some old standbys that have been around forever that fit this role, but
there are also plenty of new Linux live distributions that can be run
from CD that include great troubleshooting tools on the disc. Similarly,
even Microsoft has its own rescue CD designed to fix common problems
with its operating system. Which ones do you think are the best? Let us
know in the discussions below.
The call for contenders is closed! To see which of your nominees made the top five, head over to our hive five feature to read up, and vote for the all out winner!
Hive Five
nominations take place in the discussions, where you post your favorite
tool for the job. We get hundreds of nominations, so to make your
nomination clear, please include it at the top of your post like so: VOTE: BEST SYSTEM RESCUE DISC.
Please don't include your vote in a reply to another person.
Nominations emailed to us will not be counted. Instead, make your vote
and reply separate discussions. After you've made your nomination, let
us know what makes it stand out from the competition.
About the Hive Five:
The Hive Five feature series asks readers to answer the most frequently
asked question we get: "Which tool is the best?" Once a week we'll put
out a call for contenders looking for the best solution to a certain
problem, then YOU tell us your favorite tools to get the job done. Every
weekend, we'll report back with the top five recommendations and give
you a chance to vote on which is best. For an example, check out last
week's five best DSLRs.
