Kali Sana USB Install BUG – Detect and mount CD-ROM

MY STORY:

After few days after Kali Sana release a lot of people experiencing installation errors and bugs (including me). I really wanted to try it, It was looking amazing, design is awesome, using new GNOME, custom theme. I MUST HAVE IT! :)
I tried upgrading from old Kali, but it was too much buggy, makes me really mad!!
I created Kali live USB, installation pops out and Installation started. After selecting locale, language and keymap I got error:11892253_443333895867957_4962740437320657749_nFirst I tough something wrong with my BIOS settings or Image is damaged. After repeating the process I found out something must be wrong with this Installation, I asked a friend and he had the same problem.
I haven’t surrender, so let’s try to boot in Live Mode, that worked, awesome. I searched for application named “Install Kali”, because all distros with Live mode contain that. I finally found that, installation process started and I successfully bypassed CD-ROM detection
NOTE: Create new partitions and don’t use whole space, we need to leave space for next Installation.
After installation process GRUB failed to install, after researching I found out that was known bug!3728950 I bypassed CD-ROM detecting and I installed Kali Sana and I will not stop there! I created two other partitions, First was EXT4 and 2nd was swap area. So I had 4 partitions: 2 EXT4 and 2 SWAP. For Kali Linux 1.1.0(which will be installed later) and Kali Linux 2.0(which is already installed, but can’t boot it).111I installed Kali Linux 1.1.0 on other partitions I made. After installing Kali 1.1.0 and GRUB boot loader I executed command: “update-grub” and after rebooting I was able to select Kali Linux 2.0!
YEAHHH, but when I think little bit, It was N00B solution. I could just install GRUB from Live CD/USB, but never-mind, I installed GRUB on Kali Sana and deleted partitions of old Kali 1.1.0, after more then 10h of researching for solutions and trying boot commands I finally found how-to do it. Now I’m sharing It with you.

Steps:

  1. Boot Kali 2.0 Live mode from USB.
  2. On left side click on last item, “Show Applications”
  3. Type “Install Kali”.
  4. Click on that (once it will be loaded, you will maybe not see the continue button, but you can use ENTER for submit and mouse for selecting.)
  5.  Follow the installation instructions (NOTE: CREATE 2 PARTITIONS(ETX4 for root system and SWAP area), DON’T USE WHOLE SPACE, WE WILL NEED IT FOR ANOTHER KALI INSTALLATION) and once it will fail to install GRUB boot loader, just ignore that and click on Continue without Boot loader, it will show warnings and other sh*ts.
  6. Once finishing the installation will be done, installation window will just disappear and you can shut down the PC and remove USB.
  7. Insert USB with Kali Linux 1.1.0 or and other distro that include GRUB in installation.
  8. Install Kali Linux 1.1.0 from that USB and create another 2 partitions (ETX4 for root system and SWAP area). In this installation we will install GRUB boot loader, too. If installation found other boot loaders, select GRUB for main/master boot loader.
  9. Restart your system and you will probably see Kali Linux 1.1.0 and Kali 2.0, if not; boot in Kali Linux 1.1.0 and execute command from terminal: “update-grub”
  10. Restart PC and on boot screen select Kali Linux 2.0
It’s maybe long and not the best option, but the only one that works for me. I tried all USB ports, mounting USB as CD-ROM, manual booting with VMLINUZ kernel, nothing worked.
I hope it will help you.
